The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band will bring you an uplifting weekend of music and dance that will delight your community and enrich its members. In 24 hours, you will experience: The Saturday Evening Concert: An exhilarating concert of klezmer music and songs from the Jewish-American immigrant experience, from the tenements of New York to the Yiddish theater and Silver Screen to the Swing era. Their high-energy performance is full of humor, nostalgia and fun, engaging young and old alike. "It's infectious!. The choice of material is ideal..." Ari Davidow, foremost commentator on klezmer music, www.klezmershack.com The Sunday Klezmer Institute:Steve Weintraub, a world-renowned authority on klezmer dance, will teach the entire community how to participate in a variety of traditional Eastern European Jewish dances such as the Sherele, the Sailor's Dance, and special dances for weddings. Our band members will train your synagogue or community amateur musicians of all ages to play in a klezmer band, as well as the special techniques and improvisations on the clarinet and violin that make the klezmer sound so soulful. Our vocalist will teach everyone Yiddish songs and present a short and entertaining history of klezmer music. Dancin' Steve Weintraub The Sunday Evening Klezmer Wedding: Sunday evening, the entire community will participate in a freilach "shtetl" wedding. You will choose honorees to be the bride and groom, the rabbi, the in-laws, and other members of the wedding party. Members of Maxwell Street and your amateur musicians whom they have trained that day will play, while Steve Weintraub acts as Badchan (Master of Ceremonies), leading the guests through dances such as The Mother-in-Law Dance and The Clapping Dance. From the veiling of the bride to leading the wedding party home at the end of the festivities, your community will be guided on an emotional journey through the customs that make the Jewish wedding both an exuberant and spiritual experience. Alex Koffman Music Director and Violinist The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band has brought the joy of simcha music to hundreds of weddings. The band has also directed the Annual Midwest Klezmer and Yiddish Music Institute from 1996 to 2000. Their book of published klezmer arrangements is used by bands across the country. They have released four popular CDs, performed at Carnegie Hall and toured Europe eight times. Let them bring excitement to your community that will continue long after the event is over.
